The Dawn of a New Beginning

A new format is born

Hey friend,

today is the day of a big announcement: the format of this email changes.

But don't be scared: let me explain.

In the last few weeks, I've used this channel to inform you directly about my newly created articles. I know many of you people love them, so I'll continue to share them with you, but in a different format.

My purpose, in fact, is to educate you in Python and Data Science. And most of you are here because you're struggling to learn Python, especially Python for Data Science.

Probably, your goal is to become a Data Scientist and you'd like to know the right path to get to this goal and what to study to become one as soon as possible.

Did I guess it right?

Well, let me tell you that I totally understand you because I've been in your shoes for a lot of months.

It seems that there are so many things to know that, sometimes, you may feel like you're drowning. And, so, sometimes you think you'd better throw it all away.

I perfectly know your feelings, and this is why I'm here to help you learn Python and everything I know about it and Data Science.

So, let me show you this new format.

From now on, this newsletter will be sent weekly on weekends (in the CEST timezone) and will be structured like so:

  • We'll talk about some insights that may help you learn Python, Data Science, and/or develop your career.
  • I'll leave you, in the end, the articles I wrote in the last week so that you can take your time to read them.

So, if you're ready, we can begin right now.

"Do I really need to know Microsoft Excel?!? I want to be a Data Scientist, not an Excel monkey!"

This is something someone told me not so much time ago, and it's understandable.

I've thought something similar in the past when I was searching for my first job as a Data Scientist.

And let me tell you that it's totally understandable: when you gain confidence with Python, you feel you have some kind of superpower. It can make you feel like a hero and a wizard at the same time.

Well, you make predictions with Machine Learning, right? You master AI, don't you?!

So, why should you "downgrade" yourself using Excel like "normal folks"? Yes, like normal folks who can't code.

Well, here's a harsh truth: there is a difference between theory and practice.

Let me explain.

If you've ever worked for any kind of firm in any kind of industry you'll agree with me that there's only one certainty in every daily office job: Excel.

Yes, everyone uses Excel. And this is the reason why you should learn it. Well, you don't need to master it, but the truth is that you'll never get it out of the way.

In fact, let me ask you a question: where do you believe you'll get the data to analyze?

Yes, many times you'll find your data in an Excel file. This happens for many reasons:

  • Customers are not "technologically advanced", so they give you an Excel file. But let me ask you a question: even if they were "technologically advanced", do you think it would be easy to access their databases to retrieve the data?
  • Your company works mainly with Excel (like the majority of the companies in the world).

So, my friend, there's no escape: if you want to deal with data and Machine Learning, chances are that you'll have to deal with Excel. This means that you'll need to use them a little bit.

Well, it doesn't mean you'll always do "Excel stuff", but you'll have to deal somehow with Excel files, before using Python.

Sorry, but someone needed to say this harsh truth so that you have all the instruments to evaluate your learning path, including a bit of Excel.

And speaking of Excel...one of my latest articles is properly on it. Did you know that we can password-protect Excel sheets?

Well, so read along...

Here're the articles I get published this week:

That's all for this week.

Have a nice weekend,

Federico

Federico Trotta August the 26th Let's discuss what you can do with Python in terms of a future job. Spoiler: you don't need to become a Data Scientist or a Software Engineer. Hey friend, yesterday I saw that Microsoft is starting to integrate Python into Excel. And you know what does it mean? Well, two things for me: If you are a Python professional, the last environment where you want to use Python is Excel. AI prompts will become more important to use Excel, rather than Googling. Especially...

Federico Trotta August the 19th I'm telling you why you don't need another Python course (and what to do, instead, step by step) Hey friend, I'm sure you are what I have been for quite some time: a certificate collector. You took your first Python course. Maybe on Udemy. Then, you took another one. And then another again. You feel you're not learning that much and you're missing a learning path, but you need to show you learned something to your next employer. Also, you really want to learn...

Federico Trotta - from Medium August the 12th I'm telling you why you want to learn Python Hey friend, I am an honest person. Because honesty pays. Always. There are three main reasons why you want to learn Python: 1) You want to get a high-paying job. 2) You want a remote job. 3) You want a job that lasts, no matter the crises. Let's be honest: you want at least one of the three. Right?! We all have experienced the pandemic and the lockdowns. Another pandemic returns? Who cares? I can work...
